Ground floor · mind the tail
No reservations. No complaints. Total, immediate gratitude for the smallest kindness. Shelter dogs check in sadder than any guest alive — and check out happier than any guest ever has.
Why the volunteer hours go here
Strip hospitality down to its studs and this is what’s left: a nervous guest, an unfamiliar room, and someone deciding the next hour will be better than the last one. Walks, wash days, and the underrated discipline of just sitting with a scared dog until it isn’t — that’s desk work of the highest order, no desk involved.
You can’t network with a dog. That’s the entire point.
In a city that runs on introductions, the kennel is the one room where nobody wants anything from you but your presence. Best professional development in San Francisco, and it costs a Saturday.

The house itself
Founded 1868 — the third humane society in the country, the first west of the Mississippi, and still independent, still answering to nobody’s national office. A veterinary hospital, an adoption floor, and mobile clinics that drive out to the neighborhoods rather than waiting to be visited.
This is the room the volunteer hours go to. It is not a hard house to get into — there’s no list, and nobody asks what you do for a living.
